Friedrich Schlegel

Friedrich Schlegel (1772–1829) was a German philosopher, literary critic, and central figure of Jena Romanticism whose Athenaeum fragments and essays such as On the Study of Greek Poetry helped define early Romantic aesthetics. He developed the concepts of romantic irony and progressive universal poetry, arguing for the fusion of poetry, criticism, and philosophy. Later works, including Lucinde and his studies of Sanskrit and Indian philosophy, extended his influence into literature, philology, and comparative intellectual history.
